Composite Timber Decking

Bamboo Plastic Composite (BPC)

Board sizes:  5800x135x23mm or  5800x146x25mm

Colours:  Brown – plain brushed or grooved, Coffee, Mocha, Teak, Dark Grey, Woodgrain or Solid Tongue and groove in Brown only.

AstroDeck Composite Decking is made from a combination of approximately 65% Plantation grown Bamboo fibre and approximately 20% recycled heavy duty polyethylene or plastic (HDPE) which is like the plastic bottles your milk comes in. So saving precious timber and also reducing landfill

Other ingredients such as polymers and colours are added and then the mixture is extruded through a special machine under high temperature and pressure to produce the decking boards and other BPC products.

The Bamboo fibre provides the timber look and texture and the plastic provides the extra strength pliability and other special qualities that make it much more user friendly and longer lasting than real timber

Benefits Include:

Excellent weather and UV resistance so you do not have to be constantly protecting your timber deck with oil or sealers.
(See note regarding cleaning below)

High resistance to moisture and termites

High resistance to rotting and cracking

Good colour stability after a 12 month curing time

Slip resistant, barefoot friendly, no splinters

Knot free and each board is consistent in length width and thickness

Most boards have side grooves to facilitate concealed fixing between the boards – no drilling required. Or we also have solid tongue and groove for more commercial jobs.

DIY - the ideal home DIY product for that deck that you have been planning.

Note: Although BPC has all these advantages over timber there are also other qualities to take into account such as BPC does not have as good impact strength  such as dropping something very heavy on the edge of the deck.

Also note that BPC will mark from moving furniture or spillages unless some protective procedures are taken such as putting felt under the legs of tables and chairs. Any warranty does not include the marking of your deck. Please see note on sealing below.

Should you wish to use a BBQ on or next to the deck we suggest either a rubber mat or some synthetic turf be used to prevent oil splash.
In other words BPC is a safe environmentally responsible alternative material that is helping us to protect the environment while providing a product that is far more durable than most timbers

Cleaning

Although BPC decking requires no protection whatsoever  to the natural elements, all decks will require to be cleaned from time to time to remove dirt, marks and spillages that will occur with everyday use. Hot water with some kitchen detergent or sugar soap and a scrubbing brush will remove most marks then just wash off with a hose or pressure washer.

Sealing

Although the product does not need sealing or oiling to protect it against the elements we definitely recommend that a clear acrylic sealer is applied immediately after installation. This will help protect your deck against such things as dropped fatty food or drinks and will make the job of cleaning up any spillages so much easier. Please ask if you wish us to supply.

Colour Change

During the first 12 months your deck will weather and fade up to about 10% then remain stable but will not go dark or become tired looking like timber.

Marks

Watermarks will occur when the new deck is first rained on or is washed. This is a weathering process and will gradually reduce depending on the amount of rain or washing .  If need be they can be removed by scrubbing with warm soapy water.

Slip Resistance

Most of the boards have a brushed surface which provides excellent slip resistance in the wet making it suitable for use around spas, swimming pools, marinas and other wet areas.

Installation

Standard Wood Working tools are used to cut and fix BPC decking. Such as a 45-52mm saw with a blade not exceeding 40 teeth. Plus a speed control power drill with suitable screw driver bit.

Framework for your deck which may be in treated timber or steel must have support for the boards at no more than 400-450mm centres.

If screws need to be used in certain situations, holes need to be pilot drilled and counter sunk.

To assist with water runoff it is recommended that the deck be built with a 5mm/metre slope away from the house.

BPC decking  will expand and contract in different temperatures and humidity so you need to allow for this by not butting boards tightly end to end. Always leave at least a 5mm gap to allow for movement in length and thickness.

Plastic biscuit fittings or “clips” screwed between the boards is the standard installation however stainless steel clips and screws could be used near the coast if necessary.

So by using BPC decking boards you can reduce land fill and save timber whilst installing a superior product that is more stable than timber, sustainable and environmentally sound with a 10 yr limited warranty.
